Safe, Non-Destructive Moss Removal & Tile Protection
Hampshire’s damp climate provides the perfect breeding ground for moss, lichen, and algae on roof tiles. While it might seem like a purely aesthetic issue, heavy moss growth acts like a sponge, holding rainwater against the tile surface. During winter, this trapped water freezes and expands, causing the tile face to flake and crack (known as frost-spalling).
At Oakdene Roofing, we strictly avoid high-pressure water washers. Pressure washing forces water under high pressure past the tile laps, saturating your loft insulation and timbers. It also strips the protective sand coating off concrete tiles, severely shortening their lifespan. Instead, we use gentle, manual scraping methods combined with HSE-approved biocides.
HSE-Approved Biocides
Slow-release treatments that kill remaining spores and prevent regrowth for years.
Safety Scaffolding
We operate using roof ladders and safety towers to protect your roof outline.
Our Roof Cleaning & Care Process
1. Manual Moss Scraping
Using custom hand scrapers shaped to fit your specific tile profile (pantile, plain, double Roman), our team manually removes the bulk of the moss growth. We work from crawling boards to distribute weight and avoid cracking tiles.
2. Gutter Flush & Clearing
As moss is scraped down, it is collected to prevent it from entering your drainage system. Once the roof is clear, we thoroughly clean your gutters, check the brackets, and flush the downpipes to ensure free flow.
3. Biodegradable Biocide Treatment
We spray a high-strength, biodegradable biocide over the clean tiles. This treatment gets absorbed into the tile pores, killing microscopic moss roots, lichen spores, and green algae. Over the following months, weathering cleans any remaining stains.
Important: Pressure Wash Warning
Many fly-by-night cleaning companies offer quick pressure washing services. We strongly advise against this. Pressure washers wash away the sand aggregate that protects concrete tiles, voiding material manufacturer warranties and exposing the raw concrete to accelerate weathering.

Preventative Care
Moss thrives in shaded areas. We can advise on trimming overhanging tree branches to increase sun exposure and dry your tiles faster.
