Chimney & Lead Work

Craftsman-installed lead flashings, lead welding, and chimney structural repointing to prevent moisture ingress at critical roof junctions.

Expert Leadwork & Chimney Restoration

Lead remains the premier roofing material for waterproofing intersections. Due to its flexibility and unique molecular durability, a correctly designed and fitted lead installation can easily last over 100 years. However, lead must be allowed to expand and contract freely, meaning it requires skilled fitting using specific fixings, joints, and wood-core rolls.

At Oakdene Roofing, we avoid shortcut chemical sealants or mastic tapes. We carry out traditional bossing and hot lead-welding to fabricate seamless corner junctions, chimney back-gutters, and weatherings that survive the harshest frosts and heatwaves.

BS EN 12588 Lead

We use British-milled sheet lead in correct codes (4, 5, or 6) for stability.

Patination Oil Applied

Our Leadwork & Chimney Capabilities

Lead step & cover flashings

Fitted where pitched roofs abut brick walls. The step-flashing is chased into mortar joints, secured with lead wedges, and pointed using long-life polymeric sand-cement or lead silicone to ensure a watertight seal.

Chimney back-gutters & aprons

The rear of a chimney stack is a major collection point for rainwater. We fabricate bespoke lead back gutters and front aprons to funnel water safely away around the chimney stack.

Chimney stack repointing & capping

Exposed to extreme wind and frost, chimney mortar joints crumble. We carry out raking and deep repointing, secure chimney pots, fit bird-guard cowls to stop nesting, and lay flaunching (concrete top caps) to shed rain.

Understanding Sheet Lead Codes

Using the correct weight code is essential to prevent lead from buckling or cracking. We use Code 4 lead sheet for simple flashings and soakers; Code 5 lead sheet for back gutters, valleys, and flashings in wind-swept areas; and Code 6 or 7 lead sheet for flat roofs and box gutters where stability is paramount.
